About the experience

Founded by Artur de sa Barretto and his wife Menna van Prague in April 2009 we have been serving vegan and vegetarian food in the heart of Cambridge ever since. This technically makes us the oldest vegan and vegetarian eatery in Cambridge, after the sad and unfortunate dissolution of Rainbow Cafe.

From day one we have tried to be as environmentally friendly as possible, recycling as much as we can, leaving our pitch cleaner than when we got there and only ever serving our food in biodegradable packaging. Takeaway bags, knives, forks, salad  boxes, cups, you name it, all eco-friendly!

We have always tried to stick to buying our produce from local independent suppliers as much as possible. We get most our veg from brothers Nick and Tony down at Hilary's Wholesale. After starting off as a green grocers on Mill Road things took off and they started supplying the catering industry and retail. They're still independent and family run which is why we love them, as well as their fresh fruit and veg!

If we ever run out of the odd bit of veg on a busy day or can't make it to Hilary's on time, then its off down the road to the Market to see Joff and family at G&M Fruit n' Veg . They've been there years. It was Joff's fathers, fathers business originally. So they know what they're doing, They're actually the largest green grocers on the market. And they probably have the largest selection of different fruit, vegetables, nuts, berries, herbs, roots and all other weird and wonderful f
fresh produce you won't find at your local supermarket. Excellent quality too!

Our spices, chickpeas, olives, bread and other dry goods we get from Spice Gate, on Mill Road. These guys have been there for years and are family owned and run. Really great guys with an even greater selection of Syrian, Persian and Indian produce that are often hard to find elsewhere, you definitely won't find in a supermarket!

We get our halloumi made for us weekly. It's manufactured in Watford and comes from Watford Cows. Yes that's right, there are cows in Watford! Our supplier is Dairy Day, another independent. They're good people run by Chadi whose ancestors started making cheese in Lebanon centuries ago! Even though I'm consuming a lot less dairy nowadays a lot of you guys still love your halloumi, and I understand why! That's why I source the best, in my opinion. The cows in Watford are free range grass fed and the milk comes raw, straight from farm to factory.

Unfortunately time is always in short supply nowadays, however there's still a lot more we've missed in our story, especially the earlier years and where we are now. Rest assured though, in the coming weeks we'll be expanding on this and other sections. Follow us on Instagram to keep informed!
